***THE BECKMAN INSTITUTE FELLOWS PROGRAM*** The Beckman Institute offers fellowships to qualified young scientists in areas of research relevant to the Beckman Institute. Generally, two to three Beckman Institute Fellows per year are appointed for terms of up to three years. The schedule for the 1999 competition for Beckman Institute Fellowships follows: - Early September, 1998: Posters announcing competition are mailed. - Friday, January 8, 1999: Applications must be postmarked no later than this date. - On or around April 15, 1999: Announcement of Awards. *ELIGIBILITY* There are no nationality requirements or restrictions. *PROGRAM'S HISTORY* In fall 1991, the Beckman Institute initiated, using funding provided by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, a program of postdoctoral fellowships in the behavioral and biological sciences, chemistry, engineering, and physics. The program provides an opportunity for young scientists to spend several years doing independent research before launching formal academic careers. Fellows are selected on the basis of their professional promise, capacity for independent work, interdisciplinary interests, and outstanding achievement to date. Preference is given to those applicants whose research interests correspond to, or have significant relationship to, one or more of the programs in the Beckman Institute. *FELLOWSHIP TERMS* Recipients of the awards are expected to have a recent Ph.D. (received within the last four years) in an area of research relevant to Beckman Institute research and to be involved in interdisciplinary studies related to one of the Beckman Institute's main research themes. Fellows are expected to interact with Institute faculty members who are in their area of research; collaborative publication is encouraged. Fellows are also expected to be capable of doing independent research. Generally, two or three Fellows per year are appointed for terms of up to three years. During the term of appointment, there are no teaching or administrative duties required, other than a brief written annual report to the Director of the Institute. Each Fellow is assigned an office in the Beckman Institute, and is provided with clerical and other staff support, computing resources, and access to facilities necessary to her or his research program. The stipend for BI Fellowships is $42,000 (1999 competition), and includes a full fringe benefits package in addition to a budget for support of research activity negotiated with the Beckman Institute Director. *HOW TO REQUEST AN APPLICATION PACKET* Persons wishing to apply for a Beckman Institute Fellowship should contact the Beckman Institute for an application packet: Julie Weaver Office of Publications and Special Events Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology University of Illinois 405 North Mathew Avenue Urbana, IL 61801 Tel: (217) 244-5582 Fax: (217) 244-8371 E-mail: jweaver@uiuc.edu Application packets will contain instructions, a summary sheet to be filled out by the applicant, a Beckman Institute brochure, and a Beckman Institute faculty research profiles brochure.
